Academic Demand: Please note, Summer Academy classes offered for credit are six weeks in length; a thirty-seven-week, yearlong course is condensed into this time period. As a result, courses are rigorous and demanding, with a heavy workload that includes weekly readings, several written assignments, daily homework, and multiple quizzes and exams. The content and curriculum can be challenging and often require a high level of critical thinking and analysis. The assignments are designed to test understanding of the material and to push students to think more deeply about the subject. The exams are difficult and require students to have a thorough grasp of the material.

Science

Chemistry

Course Description:

The objective of this course is to develop the student's ability to think critically about chemistry and science-related subjects in general. This will be accomplished through lectures, labs, class discussions. The following topics will be covered: scientific measurement, atomic structure, electrons in atoms, the periodic table, ionic and metallic bonding, covalent bonding, chemical names and formulas, chemical quantities, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, the behavior of gases, water and aqueous systems, solutions, thermochemistry, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction reactions, and nuclear chemistry. Lab hours are accumulated each week.

Physics

Course Description:

Physics presents concepts of the major themes of physics. There are two ways that beginning students of physics can understand the topic: (a) through mathematical models, and (b) through concepts. This course takes the latter approach. Mathematical approaches will be used when they are deemed as guides to thinking. First year algebra experience will be all that is required. Through demonstrated discrepant events, the students will learn how to recognize physics misconceptions in their everyday lives. The students will know the historical origins and evolution of the laws of motion and energy. Especially important are the historical figures of Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, Joule and Faraday. The students will be able to apply proportional reasoning by identifying and manipulating independent, dependent and controlled variables. The students will apply proportional reasoning into laws of motion, gravity, energy, wave motion, electromagnetic field and light. Lab hours are accumulated each week.

Mathematics

Math Competition Readiness

(Open to students entering grade 4-5)

Course Description:

This summer course is designed to prepare upper elementary students for math competitions such as CML and MOEMS. Sessions will consist of logic puzzles, math games, and practice tests that build number sense and metacognition. Additionally, students will be introduced to a variety of test taking strategies to better support their confidence. Materials needed: whiteboard, dry erase marker.

Pre-Algebra Bridge

(Open to students entering grade 6)

Prerequisite*: Minimum C- or higher in Course 2 Math, 5th Grade Math, or equivalent.

Course Description:

The Pre-Algebra Bridge course is designed to prepare incoming 6th grade students for the second year of our two-year Pre-Algebra curriculum. The course includes a thorough exploration of the fundamentals of arithmetic, including fractions, exponents, and decimals. Topics include: Variables and Expressions, Operations with Integers, Operations with Rational Numbers, Expressions and Equations, Multi-Step Equations with Inequalities, Ratios.

This course includes the study of rational number properties, variables, polynomials, and factoring. Students learn to write, solve, and graph linear and quadratic equations and to solve systems of equations. They also learn to model real-world applications, including statistics and probability investigations. Course Description:

Geometry provides you with a great deal of useful information, and puts labels on ideas and principles that you use every day, maybe without even knowing it. Some of the general topics covered in a typical geometry class are basic geometric figures, deductive reasoning, parallel lines and planes, congruent triangles, quadrilaterals, inequalities of geometry, and polygons. Topics covered: Basics of Geometry, Reasoning and Proof, Parallel and Perpendicular Lines, Congruent Triangles, Relationships within Triangles, Quadrilaterals, Similarity, Right Triangle Trigonometry, Circles, Perimeter and Area, Surface Area and Volume and Transformations.

Course Description:

This course will provide student with a strong foundation in the practical and theoretical application of polynomials, matrices, conic sections, and transcendental functions. It will teach skills such as solving quadratic equations, analyzing growth and change, and algebraic problem solving. This class will have a strong focus on developing mathematical literacy skills through reading, writing, and research, and will also examine the applications of mathematics to the fields of science and engineering. For many students, this course is a prerequisite for the study of algebra and trigonometry. Topics covered: Equations and Inequalities, Linear Equations and Functions, Polynomials and Polynomial Quadratic Relations and Conic Sections, Sequences and Series, Probability and Statistics, Trigonometric Rations and Functions, and Trigonometric Graphs, Identities and Equations.

Course Description:

This course will include a study of functions, their graphs and applications of functions. The types of functions covered will be: linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric. The properties of reflection, symmetry, translations and inverses will be applied to these functions. The six trig functions will be studied and applied to graphs, simple equations, inverses and the unit circles. Course Description:

Students learn about functions, trigonometry, complex numbers, polar coordinates, and vectors and matrices. A major theme of the course is translating algebra into geometry and vice versa (in other words, equations into pictures and pictures into equations). The honors course requires a high level of creativity in problem solving and students are expected to apply concepts in unpracticed settings. These skills are actively developed through collaborative work during class.

Creative Quill: Summer Reading, Writing & Publishing Program

(Open to students entering grades 4 through 5)

Course Description:

This course, adapted from our popular middle-school course to meet the needs of elementary-aged writers, will concentrate on expanding the fundamentals of grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. Emphasis will be placed on the writing process: writing, reviewing, revising, editing, and a publish-ready document. The course will be taught in a workshop style. The purpose of the course is to help students develop their reading comprehension and their ability to write clearly in a variety of styles, preparing them for academic success in the coming year. During the course, students will be assigned a thought-provoking novel to read and discuss, enriching their literary experience and comprehension skills.

Middle School - Dynamics of Critical Reading and Creative Writing

Course Description:

This course, will concentrate on expanding the fundamentals of grammar, writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. This enrichment course will begin with a creative-writing-based assessment that will lead into focused grammar and writing strategy lessons. Students will learn to identify and correct faulty sentence structure, punctuation, and word choice and structure paragraphs effectively while developing a variety of writing competencies. Students will read and discuss examples of each type of writing we cover, as well as review and help to edit pieces written by their peers. Emphasis will be placed on the writing process: writing, reviewing, revising, editing, and a publish-ready document. During the Creative Writing section of the course, students will read and discuss fiction and nonfiction together while also writing creative works of their own. The course will be taught in a workshop style. The purpose of the course is to help students develop their reading comprehension and their ability to write clearly in a variety of styles, preparing them for academic success in the coming year.

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to public speaking (speech) and argumentation (debate). By the end of the course, students should feel comfortable making well structured public speeches, efficiently using Google Scholar for MLA cited research, and developing logically consistent and persuasive arguments. The classroom will include multidisciplinary discussions about U.S. government, international relations, school policies, court cases and legal definitions, economics, philosophy, modern communication techniques, and performing arts. While there are a few traditional quizzed lectures based on the topics listed below, the class is largely hands on and participatory, so most skills learned will be through the many diverse and structured projects. Each project will have very detailed written and oral instructions, with a step by step guide to help the student execute the skill taught, written and oral examples, and a grading rubric. While the skills learned in the class are essential to any student who is interested in competing at an extracurricular speech/debate tournament, the main emphasis is not on preparing students to compete at upcoming tournaments but rather on life-long skills relating to a student’s public speaking, research, organization, and argumentation abilities.
