Ritam Adhikari: Grade 11

Ritam Adhikari, an IB Diploma junior at The Quarry Lane School, has built an impressive research portfolio by combining his love of mathematics and computer science with a passion for solving real-world problems in biology and medicine. What began as early curiosity in problem-solving has grown into advanced research experiences at both Georgetown University and Harvard. 


 

 

 

Dr. Thuy Pham: US Math Teacher

Upper School Mathematics instructor, Dr. Thuy Pham, is currently in her 11th year at Quarry Lane.  Throughout her time at Quarry Lane, she’s become a beloved teacher and mentor for many students. She was inspired by her father to love mathematics as a child and won a number of mathematics awards at a young age, including a Bronze medal at the 34th International Mathematical Olympiad. Dr. Pham was honored with The University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator Award in 2018, a recognition that speaks to her exceptional dedication, impact, and commitment to students both in and beyond the classroom.


 

 

 

Gurnash Singh - Grade 7

For QLS seventh grader, Guransh Singh, the rhythm of the tabla has nearly been a lifelong soundtrack. After starting the instrument at just three years old--making his recorded debut on his fourth birthday--Guransh has transformed a childhood passion into national-level excellence. This past January, his dedication reached a new crescendo as he secured first place in the Solo Tabla Category at the prestigious annual Raag Naad competition. In addition to his school work and tabla studies, he also studies Punjabi and participates in an organization dedicated to community service and supporting the local gurdwara and community.

 

 

Mr. Jason Hansen - Music Teacher

With over 20 years experience as a professional musician, performing in 49 of the 50 United States and 40 countries around the world on 5 different continents, QLS Music instructor, Mr. Jason Hansen brought a wealth of music experience, appreciation, and knowledge to his classes at Quarry Lane. Under Mr. Hansen’s guidance, students of all experience levels have flourished. The profound progress they achieve over the course of the year highlights his dedication to fostering a deep, lifelong love of music.


 

 

 

Yookta Pandit - Grade 9

Known for her remarkable dedication to the field of engineering and her collaborative spirit, freshman Yookta Pandit has recently achieved a series of historic milestones that have placed her among the top young scientific minds in the country. Her drive extends well beyond the lab; a competitive swimmer of four years, Yookta proved her endurance in 7th grade as the youngest person to complete a 1.2-mile swim in Lake Tahoe—a distance she aims to surpass this summer.

Whether earning gold in the National Spanish Exam or securing awards in the Science Olympiad, her journey is a shining example of where curiosity, hard work, and a passion for problem-solving can lead, from regional grand prizes to national recognition in our nation’s capital.


 

 

 

Ms. Jessica Zenker Nasseri - MS Science Teacher

With 27 years of classroom experience under her belt, Ms. Zenker is the kind of educator who turns a science lab into a launchpad for lifelong curiosity. Having spent the last eight years as a cornerstone of our school community—following nearly two decades of teaching—she continues to set the high bar for excellence and dedication.

Her impact was celebrated once again at last spring’s Science Fair, where she was honored as Teacher of the Year for the second time. This recognition is a testament to more than just her tenure; it highlights a deep-seated passion for scientific discovery and a relentless commitment to her students. Whether she is mentoring a complex research project or cultivating the next generation of critical thinkers, Ms. Zenker’s influence remains a driving force in our science department.


 

 

 

Stella Chen Lama

We are incredibly proud to feature a remarkable young creator in this week’s spotlight: third grader, Stella Chen Lama,  who has already achieved the milestone of becoming a published author and illustrator. Combining her passion for art—which she shares is her favorite class at school—with a heart for helping others, she recently wrote, illustrated, and released a book of affirmations titled, Little Artists and Big Affirmations,  designed to inspire and uplift readers of all ages. Her achievement is a beautiful example of how our students take the "Cougar Spirit" of leadership and creativity beyond the classroom walls. Seeing a third grader navigate the professional world of publishing, fueled by the skills she hones in her favorite art projects, is an inspiration to us all!


 

 

 

Ms. Karin Ferro - Art Teacher

A true master of her craft, this week's Faculty Spotlight features Upper School Art teacher, Ms. Karin Ferro. Ms. Ferro's passion for creativity extends far beyond the walls of her classroom. As a published author and illustrator of Kalea the Mosaic Sea Turtle and illustrator of Colors of Ima, she brings a wealth of professional artistry and real-world experience to our students every day. Her journey as an author-illustrator allows her to provide unique insights into the creative process, encouraging her students to find their own voices and see themselves as the authors of their own artistic stories.
