Over the summer, our Speech and Debate team competed in the National Speech & Debate Association's national tournament, where they flew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to face the toughest competition in the world and finished 3rd overall in International Public Forum Debate.
The team, represented by debaters Keya Vijapure and Anik Sen, qualified to nationals after finishing in the final rounds of the national qualifier debate, which matched them up against the top debaters from one of the most competitive districts in the country. Keya and Anik debated 3 times a day throughout the week-long tournament, earning a record of 7 wins and 5 losses in the exhibition rounds before finishing their run in the semi-final round against internationally ranked teams from China, Japan, the United States and more. This accomplishment capped the team's success during the 2017-2018 school year, which included recognition at the California State level and winning the School Sweepstakes award at the prestigious, national Tournament of Champions debate. We're set to continue the momentum into this school year at the upcoming Loyola debate in Los Angeles and the Yale debate in early September.
