Last weekend's debate tournament at Alta High School featured a crucial victory for the Quarry Lane Cougars with Keya V. and Anik S. earning a bid to the annual Tournament of Champions (TOC). In addition, this past Saturday, our speech team attended GGSA's second tournament for individual events this year, earning a number of awards for our middle school students.A renowned national circuit competition, the Alta Silver and Black Invitational in Utah, drew hundreds of competitors from across the Midwest as well as the Pacific Coast. In the Lincoln Douglas division, debater Vineela Gogineni won five of her ballots and earned 30th place in her category. Meanwhile, in Public Forum, sophomores Aarushi Jain and Tanvi Pendurthi won four of their rounds against primarily junior and senior competitors. Close behind were teams Kushal Kodnad, Karan Saini, Harika Atluri, and Swetha Atluri, both of which won two of their rounds. In the best news of all, Public Forum veterans Keya Vijapure and Anik Sen placed third in the entire category, thus earning a bid to the annual Tournament of Champions (TOC). Against seasoned debaters from throughout the nation, the Quarry Lane debate team has earned both esteem and high praise.
At the GGSA tournament, held at the Sonoma Valley High School, the speech competition featured a myriad of categories, ranging from original oratory to interpretation events. Finishing in first place overall for Novice International Extemp was Romal Mitr. In Duo Interpretation, Anushri Roy and Chiara Melchor won first place, totaling three Quarry Lane middle schoolers finishing in first place. In Novice Extemporaneous Speaking, Akaash Babu won each of his preliminary rounds and broke to finals in his first time entering that event.
Finally, our team has a number of debaters who deserve individual recognition for their accomplishments so far this year. Keya Vijapure is at the top of the NSDA rankings as the #1 Public Forum debater in California and #15th in the country. Anik Sen, who won 2nd place overall in speaker points at the Alta debate, is ranked as #9 in California and #57 in the country. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Sai Karavadi leads the rankings at #1 in the state and #3 in the country! Congratulations to all competitors!
