Last weekend, our speech and debate team made their mark at one of the year's most prominent tournaments, the Dempsey Cronin Invitational.
Hosted at the University of Santa Clara, this competition offers both novice and varsity events ranging from Public Forum to Humorous Interpretation. In Senate Congress, Suhani Narayan and Akaash Babu placed 6th and 3rd among fifty other veteran debaters. Aditya Ghorpade and Avighna Vohra, as well as Kalyani Valiyaveetil and Olivia He were both octa-finalists in novice Parliamentary, one of the most popular categories of the tournament. Freshman Sachi Patel took 1st in speaker awards in novice Public Forum. Her partner Vir Goel, meanwhile, was ranked 14th speaker overall with Anish Kumar one place behind.
Meanwhile, our speech competitors shined equally bright. In Duo Interpretation, Adrienne Base and Baljeet Dhaliwal were ranked as semifinalists, narrowly missing a break to the final round. In novice Extemporaneous, sophomore Harshita Krupadanam placed 5th in her debut performance. Prisha Bhadra and Kunal Khaware entertained judges in varsity Duo Interpretation, snagging 4th place as well as a lucrative bid to the Tournament of Champions. Junior Prisha Bhadra also broke to semifinals in varsity Original Oratory, winning her another bid and making Quarry Lane history! In the best news of all, Michael Schoonover was ranked 1st place in varsity Dramatic Interpretation, making him the first student of the year to officially qualify for the Tournament of Champions. This is quite a way to close out the semester; against seasoned competitors from across the district, the Quarry Lane speech and debate team has earned both esteem and high praise.
