The Upper School follows a modified block schedule. Students follow a traditional bell schedule on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays of each week. There are also two block days, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, of each week. The block days provide a longer period (88 minutes) of instruction for each class, one day each week, to allow a lengthier period for activities such as labs, writers’ workshops, Harkness discussions, and creative projects. Built into this block schedule are daily meetings for students to seek tutoring and extra help from teachers, giving students increased access to their teachers. An advisory period that meets for a longer period of time twice a week is also built into the schedule. This schedule also increases the amount of time students have for student-based learning and teacher mentoring. More class time is available to develop key concepts, incorporate creativity, and implement a variety of classroom activities that address different learning styles.
